How to care for an animal from a shelter: our experience

Stray animals are not “problem” animals. They are animals that have been abandoned, lost, or unable to be protected. They do not need pity, but understanding, patience, and love.

When an animal comes from a shelter to a new family, everything starts from scratch for it. New people, a new home, new sounds, and new rules can be scary. That is why the most important thing is to give it time to adapt.

Basic rules for adaptation:

  • do not force contact;
  • do not shout or punish;
  • speak calmly;
  • create a safe place to rest;
  • stick to a daily routine.

Our experience

In 2021, we took an adult sheepdog from a shelter. His name is Lord. The decision was conscious and confident — we knew that we wanted to give a home to an animal from a shelter.

The beginning was not easy. Lord had a difficult time adjusting: he was wary, did not immediately trust people, was afraid of sudden movements, and needed time to get used to his new home. We understood that this was a result of his past experiences, not a character trait.

Over time, thanks to patience, calmness, and care, Lord opened up. Step by step, he began to trust, and today he is the sweetest, most devoted pet and a full-fledged member of our family.

Why you should adopt animals from shelters

Every animal saved is a life saved. It is also a story of trust that develops gradually but lasts forever.

🐾 Animals from shelters are no worse than others. They are just eagerly waiting for their forever home.
