Animal shelters in Transcarpathia: Uzhhorod and Mukachevo
In the Zakarpattia region, as in the rest of Ukraine, the problem of stray animals is extremely acute. Shelters and volunteer initiatives are working at full capacity — they save lives, but need support from the community. Below is an overview of the main shelters/centers in two key cities in Zakarpattia.
Uzhhorod
Barbos Shelter
This is one of the most well-known volunteer initiatives in Uzhhorod.
The Barbos shelter houses a large number of animals: about 70 dogs, 60 cats, and several large animals, including horses and goats. The shelter operates exclusively on a volunteer basis, without stable funding. There are quarantine enclosures, vaccination and sterilization procedures, as well as daily animal care.
